The external mailer often feature Taiwanese characters , and , although most of the bundle seem to occur from China , some other countries of descent have included Serbia , Kyrgyzstan , Uzbekistan and Malaysia .
During a July 28 press conference , Reuters questioned China ’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin about the unasked mailing .
“ USPS recently found some software package of seed with reference labels indicate they were sent from China , ” Wenbin commented . “ After check with China Post , those address recording label turned out to be fake ones with erroneous layout and entries . China Post has contacted USPS , ask it to post those fake packages to China for investigation . ”
Seed IDs
Besides establishing just who is sending the seed parcel , state and federal official will also need to set what kinds of seeds have been sent .
“ I ’ve see moving picture that say [ they are ] spinach cum , ” Ong enunciate . “ I have date pictures that depend like citrus seeds . I reckon I saw one film that looked like a lentil cum . ”
Many of the seeds seem to be those of vegetable or herbs . To date , the Plant Protection programme of USDA ’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service ( APHIS ) has identified 14 seed coinage . They include mustard , cabbage , morning glory , pile , sage , rosemary , lilac-colored , hibiscus and pink wine .
“ This is just a subset of the samples we ’ve collected so far , ” says Deputy Administrator for Plant Protection Osama El - Lissy .
“ The country Department of Agriculture and USDA are doing their due diligence to turn back it out and take some precautions , ” Ong enunciate . “ On the biology side , if the seed are , allow ’s say , grass seeds or , bad case , noxious weed seed that may or may not live in the U.S. , they can cause prejudicious effects to our ecosystem . ”
If there are some problem plants in the mix , they could wreak mayhem on our farms and food for thought supply .
“ We ’ve got some not bad examples from history , ” Ong says . “ Think about the twenties and 1930s and the story ofkudzuin the South . It was brought in to help prevent corrosion and guess what bechance ? It pack over and basically did a caboodle of economic equipment casualty . ”
