For Cole Etheredge , associate professor in floriculture and cosmetic horticulture in MSU ’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences , installing and overseeing the 24 raised peak bed allows his students to learn how to the right way give care for and harvest time cut flowers . “ As we proceed to expand the flower garden , I project to incorporate as many flowered - based courses as possible , including Floral Design II in the fall and a cut blossom gardening class in summertime 2025 , ” said Etheredge . “ My overall end is to give the students the knowledge and authority needed to produce a portion of their own cut flowers for future careers . ”

Etheredge has rise and evaluated 23 varieties of specialty - edit out one-year flowers as part of an experiment through the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers .

For Lynette McDougald , director of the University Florist and instructor in the floral management program , the garden allows students to use locally grown , slew prime in projects such as centrepiece for parties , church service decoration , or everyday intention .
“ The beds grow atop a hill overlooking the farm , which I believe is one of the prettiest property on campus , ” McDougald said . “ This project is particularly important since many of the variety show we ’re grow are often found on the U.S. West Coast for home distribution . They do not ship well , so it ’s authoritative that we grow them for local use . ”
The garden is home to a assortment of bloom , include ornamental sorghum , solaria , sunflowers , and genus Gomphrena . The faculty hopes to eventually expand the garden with more varieties and extra beds .
