I exist in a place which is either surrounded or in near proximity to all of Slovenia ’s three mountain reach . The Julian Alps , the Karawanks and the Kamnik - Savinja Alps . These are monumental and herculean slew . And , for most of the year , cold as well . It ’s not strange to see them cover in snow , not only during winter , but in fall and in springtime as well …
The mountains obviously have a meaning influence on our atmospheric condition conditions . And as such , on our horticulture activities too !
For one thing , it ’s colder when compare to area which lay further by from high mountain elevation . The jeopardy of frost ( and even snow ! ) lingers on until the 2d one-half of May . Unfortunately , I am not capable to start gardening as too soon as those who live in warmer climates can …
We have an interesting previous conditions folklore sound out around here which most gardeners take very badly . It go something like this :
Do NOT constitute warm time of year veggie in the garden before so phone “ shabu adult male ” and the gentlewoman experience as “ poscana Zofta ” come up for a visit . That ’s because they are always acompanied with rain , inhuman , rime and sometimes even snow .
If you ’re wondering who all these people are and when do they come for a visit , here ’s an explanation . The Methedrine humans are three Christian saints who have their name day in May . The first one is Saint Pancras who has a name day on 12th of May . The second one is Saint Servatius who has a name day on 13th of May . The third one is Saint Boniface who has a name day on 14th of May . And the daylight which we call “ Poscana Zofka ” is 15th of May .
I do n’t look at myself to be a superstitious mortal . However , this year , I in spades plan to follow this old saying ’s advice . You see , I ignored it last yr . And I got badly burn because of it …
The weather in the beginning of last May was great . It was incredibly sunny and strong . Almost summer - similar . Even in the mornings . So I excitedly said this to myself : “ The meth serviceman are not coming this year . I better get go and transplant all those tomatoes , pepper and garden egg I just buy out to the garden . The earlier I do it , the earlier I ’ll have the harvest . How naive of me I did n’t come in up with this genious idea even sooner ! ”
So I went ahead . And I did just that . I transplanted almost every industrial plant I had . thing were look good for a while . plant life started to grow rapidly . Then , one calendar week later , on 12th of May 2018 , a calamity occurs . A sudden , former - afternon hailstorm strikes and wipes out all my plants …
I do n’t have to excuse how sad and angry I feel at that minute . It was painful to see all my efforts go down the drainpipe . But I definitely learned my lesson . I ’m not transplanting my fond time of year plant life to the garden prior to 15th of May . No matter how beautiful the weather may be prior to that day of the month !
Do n’t get me wrong , though . I never wait that long to open my gardening time of year . I just ca n’t . I get the planting spoil as soon as the spring starts . Luckily , there ’s spate of things I can do before May …
For representative , I can make a listing of vegetable I plan to develop this year . I can empty the compost bin . And I can even do some planting and sowing . Despite the risk of hoar . Because some vegetables ( such as spinach plant , chard , onions , eulogy and carrot for instance ) just do n’t mind a bit of cold every now and then . In fact , they seem to love it !
