That’s Not My Name

I admit , this is a snatch of a squib . Regardless :

I latterly had dinner party at an aunty ’s home , with her husband and her three untried children . I ordinarily furnish unsounded help in the kitchen , not because I have nothing to say but because one more voice among the shrill babble of babies would surely fetch the house down .

It was during one of these stoic kitchen preliminaries that I discover how my aunt oftentimes calls her nestling “ Sweet Pea . ”

“ Sweet Pea . ”Lathyrus odoratus ? Where did this , and other , botanical appellation issue forth from ? Here ’s a list of some ( off the top of my opinionated head ) that I ca n’t realise :

Sweet Pea

angelical peas ( Lathyrus odoratus , annual)arevery pretty indeed . Pinnate leaf , confect - colored flowers , and a climbing habit . But Gregor Mendel botched the pet name for me when he used the plants to canvass genetics . Now , I regress to Punnett square in middle schoolhouse skill form whenever SP rolls off a tongue nearby .

Punkin’ or Pumpkin

I ca n’t believe someone thought it would be cunning to set out call the darlings among us “ Pumpkin ” ( or the colloquialised “ Punkin ” ) . To essentially tell me that I remind you of a large , round , thickset - skinned member of theCucurbitaclan is not endear .

Jujubee

Believe it or not , I ’ve heard this one many time before . Jujubee ( Ziziphus jujuba)fruits are despicable as sin and apportion a name with a gummy candy . Also view this : the intelligence ‘ Jujubee ’ has been efficaciously redefine as the second stolon - up to time of year 2 ofRuPaul ’s Drag Race*.There ’s only room for one Jujubee in this public , if you ask me .

Apple of my Eye

Plain strange . I ’m sure an entymologist could give me an illuminating history of the full term , but that has n’t happened yet .
