Making a beautiful garden in the shade
Today we ’re visiting with Terry Karpen .
My garden in Redding , Connecticut , is a study of interplay between the design and the furious , the esthetic and the virtual , the ecologically sound and the esthetically pleasing .
Woodlandshade repeated margin , in which the native trees and shrubs be the upper history , surround my log home , which is conterminous to a 1,600 - acre Nature Conservancy preserve .

The holding is protect by a circumspect deer fencing that was installed to allow the forest to recover from the ravages of the excessive local deer population . In addition to emphasise hardy perennial plant , the structure and penning of the garden precludes all use of chemical fertilizers , herbicides , and pesticide , which minimizes both negative ecological impact and maintenance costs . For example , fallen leavesare left on seam to provide natural mulch , encroaching plant speciesare absent by hand , and volunteernative plantsare encouraged . My goal with this garden , as well as withQueen of Spades , my garden and landscape painting designing party , is to put up an model of how global concerns such as wood red and chemical fertilizers and pesticide exercise can be address in gardening pattern without compromise the good will and beauty of the landscape design .
