The eminent desert has astonishingly diverse landscape painting and flora , but one thing is for sure : there is no famine of gorgeous perennial to choose from . We shoot the breeze with David Salman , primary horticulturist for High Country Gardens in Santa Fe , New Mexico , and demand him to name some of his preferent underused perennials as well as soon - to - be home favourite . We all have our favorite , go - to perennials that grow attractively in our gardens , but sometimes it ’s playfulness to change thing up to give your garden some new interest . This fragrant and xeric - friendly hummingbird and bee magnet not only provides your garden with airy foliage , but its peach - colored bloom are the perfect addition to any garden ’s coloring material palette .
When it add up to newer “ up and coming ” perennial , David mentioned a couple that really digest out to us .
Sandia Glow ® red yucca(Hesperaloe parviflora‘MSWNPERED ’ , Zones 5–9 ) ( see above ) is a showstopper . I ’m a hesperaloe fan in cosmopolitan , but this exclusive breed is a tangible treat . consort to David , this variety boast 3 - foot - tall bloom stems with jaw - send packing dark reddened flush all summer . This succulent give year - one shot leaf interest and is the perfect alternative for a low - water fleck in full sun .

The final newcomer that we had to deal with you is FlowerKisser ™ Dark Shadows sage(Salvia‘WWG001 ’ , Zones 5–9 ) . This hybrid sage blooms from midsummer to fall and is coated in vibrant purple flowers . David says the sweetly aromatic flowers and foliage are uneaten by coney and deer . It ’s a staring addition to any paseo , as it releases a delicious fragrance when impact .
