Embracing the end of the growing season
We often hear from Cherry Ong when she ’s locomote to visit a marvelouspublic garden , but today she ’s letting us in to see her home garden in Richmond , British Columbia . She says that she ’s memorize to bed gloam and is sharing the knockout of hershade gardenwith pictures she take in earlyOctober .
Cherry uses foliage to great force . Here a warmHeuchera(Zones 5–9 ) is paired with the bright yellow foliage of Mexican orange ( Choisyaternata‘Sundance ’ , Zones 7–10 ) . The yellow foliage upshot is backed up by a big clump of Nipponese wood forage ( Hakonechloamacra‘Aurea ’ , Zones 5–9 ) .
How is THAT for foliation effect ? Avariegatedskimmia ( Skimmiajaponica , Zones 7–9 ) face awing with its contrast of pinkish flower bud against the leaves .

A perfect foliation combination : The divided foliage of the hellebore ( Helleborushybrid , Zones 4–9 ) contrast beautifully in bothtextureand color with the extensive , silver farewell of Siberian bugloss ( Brunneramacrophylla , Zones 3–8 ) .
This darkJapanese maple(Acerpalmatum , Zones 5–9 ) looks all the darker with a sunny Japanese forest grass as a backdrop .
I love the sullen , glossy foliage of thisbegonia(Begoniahybrid , hardiness varies by cultivar , unremarkably grown asannuals )

Toad lily(Tricyrtisformosana , Zones 4–9 ) is a quiet presence in the shade garden until it explodes into bloom each declivity .
Each toad frog lily prime is beautifully speckled with purple .

A look out into the garden reveals a beautyberry ( Callicarpasp . , Zones 5–9 ) load down with purpleberries .
