Unusual plants and happy combinations
We ’re visiting with Chad and Seyra Hammond in Woodbury , Connecticut , today . We hold back by their beautiful garden last hebdomad ( Chad and Seyra ’s Garden ) , and I ’m happy to be back there today . They love uprise and collectingunusual plant life , and the resolution is a beautiful and fascinating garden .
We startedwater gardeningafter the koi pond proved too emotionally task for us . ( Many of you be intimate the heartache of lose your fish to predator . ) So now we grow water supply lilies(Nymphaeaspecies and hybrids ) andlotus(Nelumbo nucifera , Zones 5–10 ) . We fertilise them withpondtabs every couple of calendar week in the summertime and separate them every three to four year . They exist the winter in the pond with no extra protection . I would reckon them very low maintenance except that you do have to get wet now and then , and lifting waterlogged jackpot full of clay and roots can be challenging . hold start the pots minuscule and using lightweight media rather of cadaver would probably facilitate if I got around to accept my own advice .
We love chitchat gardens wherever we go . Many years ago I see a combining ofSchizachyrium scoparium(Zones 3–9 ) andRudbeckiatriloba(Zones 4–8 ) at theNational Arboretum in Washington , D.C. , that I could never get out of my read/write head . It manifested itself here in our garden many long time afterward . I do it it so much I recollect I ’ll always have some iteration of it . This photo showsSchizycharium scoparium‘Standing Ovation ’ andHelianthussalicifolius(Zones 4–9 ) in the foreground , and thefall colorsofViburnumnudum‘Brandywine ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) pick up the pinkish timber of the sess .

We have started collecting primulas also . There are so many species and variation within the metal money . Many are easy to grow from come and spread well in the correct condition . These delicacy little blooms arePrimulajaponica(Zones 4–8 ) , withTiarellacordifolia(Zones 4–9 ) , grow in a shady , moist layer . Both spread eagerly and make ebullient displays in spring . I have been disperse them around any other hospitable patches of terra firma I arrive across because I ca n’t get enough of these two together .
As you’re able to tell , we have many plant life addictions . Begoniasare one of them . They seem to thrive in the brilliant shade of thepatioon the north side of the house . Their eternal leaf shapes , texture , and colors along with their ease ofpropagationmakes them so collectible . This exposure includesBegonialuxuriansandB. parviflora , and the loan-blend ‘ Pigskin , ’ ‘ Marmaduke , ’ ‘ Connie Boswell , ’ ‘ Little Brother Montgomery ’ ( zone 9–11 or maturate as yearly or houseplant ) , and some unnamed varieties .
These begonia , along with about a million other plants , need to occur inwardly in October during the Great Plant Migration . Here is Chad , the lofty plant dad , carry them down to the basement for their tenacious wintertime ’s nap . He is 6 ft . 4 in . for scale .

Here is a favorite plant combination of mine that we can take no credit for . This isHydrangea quercifolia‘Little Honey ’ ( Zones 5–9),Impatiensomeiana(Zones 6–9 ) , andLobeliacardinalis‘Black Truffle ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) .
Yet another plant dependence of ours is redbud , particularly the 1 with colorful foliage . We love their big heart - shaped leave . It just so happens that the specie is aboriginal to much of the country , offer flowers forpollinatorsinearly spring , and even has a bit of nightfall color if you ’re prosperous . Our favorite includeCerciscanadensis‘Alley Cat ’ ( Zones 4–8 ; pictured ) , which is a bright beacon in the dark woods . To the left isCalycanthusfloridus‘Burgundy Spice ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) .
I am so enamored by the freckles onCercis‘Rising Sun ’ .

Here are some leave of absence ofCercis‘Ruby Falls ’ frosted by an earlyOctobersnowfall .
One annual we make love for adding bulk and interest to understocked and tiresome borders isRicinuscommunis‘New Zealand Purple ’ ( Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) on the leftfield . Panicumvirgatum ‘ Northwind ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) andChrysanthemum‘Rustic Glow ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) are in the foreground .
Yes , conventional soundness says to bequeath the lady slipperorchidsto the experts . They are expensive and finicky . But you wo n’t know until you try . And we just had to essay . This is aCypripediumjaponicum(Zones 4–7 ) we implant in the woods in the native territory with forest - microchip mulch about three years ago . This spring we had two bloom ! During the week or so it was in bloom , you comfortably believe I was out there goggle every moment I could . And it is a good thing I soaked it in as much as I did . The drought was abominable this year , and the foliage shrivel aside in late summer despite our attempts atwatering . We wo n’t know until spring if we ’ve mislay it for good or if it just decide to go dormant early on . care us luck . We can not expect to find out if this one will be coming back .
