If you ’re in a house that celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah , you might be wondering how to merge the two celebrations from both a practical and decor perspective . Since I ’m in an interfaith sept ( I ’m Jewish and my husband is n’t ) , I ’ve had many geezerhood to speculate this question and have even started some traditions of my own .

What Is Chrismukkah?
This year , the first night of Hanukkah falls on December 25 . So why is it so confining to Christmas this year ? The Judaic calendar is lunar - solar , which think of it pursue the cycle of the moon but sometimes has to be corrected by the sun , ( with an surplus calendar month added ) , to ensure that the Jewish holiday stay in the right time of year . For example , Hanukkah stays in December , bring light to winter .

Let There Be Lights!
While the two holidays are distinctly different , both are stories of hope in the centre of the coldest time of yr when the days are little . So it ’s no wonder that lights are a central element .
After the destruction of one of the ancient temple , there was only enough oil left to last one day , but a miracle occurred and the fossil oil live eight days . To memorialise this , on each of the eight days of Hanukkah ( also known asThe Festival of Lights ) , we illuminate wax light on a menorah .
We also expose various forms of light around the house . I string blue and blank light around our fireplace mantel and room access , and hang strand of twinkle lights in the dining and living room . My hubby ca n’t wait for December 1 when he pull out the ladder and hangs lights around our porch and service department ; the porch gets traditionalmulti - colored Christmas lightswhile the service department gets Hanukkah - themed blue and white . And we alternate the placement from year to year .

Go Bold with Wrapping Paper
Hanukkah last eight day , and we give multiple present each Nox . Combine that with Christmas and that ’s a pot of swathe paper ! For presents under the tree , I utilise a premix of swathe newspaper in festal colour that are outside the usual greens and carmine . A few of my best-loved combos are silver wrapping newspaper publisher with blue medallion ( give a nod to the traditional Hanukkah colors ) , gold paper with blank or unripened ribbon , and a plaid in aristocratic and white with a pinch of pink , red , and smuggled .
I also look for gay patterns that are n’t splice to a specific vacation — for example , designs that boast sensation or starbursts . Another go - to of mine for roll endowment isusing materials around the house , like brown newspaper bags or lambskin paper , which can be dressed up with colored ribbon and natural element like dry bloom and greenery .
Create a Menorah Display
Sometimes it can feel like Hanukkah runs a small short in the section of ribbon that you’re able to keep up throughout the holiday season . Since we have a Christmas tree up for much of December , we figured out a way to showcase the menorah , the centrepiece of Hanukkah .
Instead of just remove the menorah out when it ’s prison term to light the candles , we create a display of multiple menorahs with different figure . Each one has a especial meaning ; my mom gave me one as a gift , my son made one in preschool , and another has an animal for each candela holder , yield a nod to our kinsfolk ’s love of creature and deary . This menorahmade from faux marble concrete ( that you’re able to make yourself ! ) is also a part of my display .
