Creative designs centered on foliage
Today we ’re paying another sojourn to Syd Carpenter ’s howling Philadelphia garden , where she boldly conflate all sorts of plant life and garden art to wonderful effect . If you lack previous visits to this wonderful garden , come out here .
These photograph are from last summer and as always expose her unbelievable power to combine plants in originative and inspiring way of life .
Avariegatedhosta , variegated lily turf ( Liriopemuscari , Zones 5–10 ) , and acaladium(probably the mixed bag ‘ Miss Muffet ’ , Zones 9–11 or as a stamp bulb ) make magic trick together .

Many of the plant in this photo are well known as house plants , such as the silver - striped silver inch plant ( Tradescantiazebrina ) . But many “ family plants ” make great annuals for tint . And if you bring them indoors before hoar , they can exist through the winter on the windowsill before returning to the garden next year .
Syd is an creative person , and spectacular garden art , like the large carving hanging on the wall here , is a central part of this garden .
young breeding has create elephant ear ( Colocasia ) in a extensive image of size and leaf colors , such as this smaller - growing , dark - leaved variety in a container . They bring a tropical flair to any garden and thrive in blistering summertime .

This is , I conceive , the annualAmmimajor , sometimes called bishop ’s bloom , and is basically a more tasteful version of Queen Anne ’s lace ( Dacuscarota ) . The weblike white flowers aging to green are beautiful and are beloved by all kind ofpollinators .
Hardy plants and tropicals mix freely in this garden , with a huge oakleaf hydrangea ( Hydrangeaquercifolia , Zones 5–10 ) in the back , a big slew of purple Mexican dayflower ( Tinantiapringlei , Zones 6–10 ) , and the yellow blossom heads of tenderGuzmaniabromeliads flux in for a tropical flair .
Foliage is the genius in this garden , with pictorial purple coming from royal shamrock ( Oxalisregnelliivar.triangularis , Zones 7–10 ) .

A sculpted fount peaks out from behind elephant ears .
