Courgettes

Curried Courgette & Chilli Relish

The humble courgette is one plant that seems to succeed for everyone . When you ’ve made all the soup and patty you may eat on , try preserving some as a relish . It ’s a capital room to prevent wastefulness and get to a very welcome Christmas talent . Rolawn ’s Customer Service Manager , Emily , found a great recipe to apportion :

Ingredients

Makes approx . 5 jars .

The amount of chilli and curry pulverisation can be wide-ranging to savour .

remove water system from courgette

There are a   match of mode to do this . Traditionally , courgettes and other watery vegetable are salted , left for a while for the water to enfeeble out , squeeze and rinse .

Emily prefers to eat into the courgette and keep it in the deep freezer ( a great way to store it when you have a surfeit , it can then be sum to meal as you ’re cooking ! ) . She then deice it in a sieve over a large bowlful overnight – a really easy way to remove the pee .

The courgette water can be used in smoothies , for preparation veg , in stock , or even in a zucchini martini !

Pickling

A eminence on pickling . If you ’re design to pickle your produce the first thing to take is its freshness because the fresher it is the good . If you suspect yours is past its good , then it is better to apply it for jams or chutneys instead .

Courgette and Mint Soup

This one is useful for eating up zucchini that have been pick for a few days .

serve 3 - 4

Melt the butter in a orotund saucepan and add half the oil . Over a medium heat , sauté the onion until soft , but not browned . tote up the courgettes , season and cook for about five minutes before adding the peas and livestock . Add extra water system to cover the ingredients if necessary . fetch to the furuncle , then simmer for a few minutes . jibe the flavoring , blend in the mixture , thinning with more water if needed .

Apples

Mincemeat is a nifty   way to use apple bonanza or extras that you ’re struggling to store . Bottled up in squeamish conserve jars it could be added to a trammel . instead , it would make a useful donation to school Christmas Sir Thomas Raffles or local community fairs .

Raspberries

Homemade tipple are always a favourite and so easy to make .

employ 500 thou of raspberries and 250 g of lolly per litre of gin or vodka .

Add the raspberries and sugar to a sterilised preserving jolt , pour in half the vodka , seal and shake well before adding the remaining vodka .

hive away the well - sealed jarful in a nerveless , disconsolate place , turning the contents daily , for the first week . After 2 to 3 hebdomad , strain the liquid into bottles and recording label .

Dried herbs

Most herbs can be carry on well when dried . just give ear herbs upside down in a fond , juiceless and aery place , covered with paper bag to prevent dust from settling on them . Once they are crispy dry , scranch them into airtight jars and they ’ll keep you start until next yr ’s crop .

English lavender should really be pruned in the 2d half of August to help the new shoots to indurate before wintertime , but if you ’ve leave it for the bee and butterflies to enjoy a while longer , then now is the metre to give it a hard prune .

Ideally , you would use the efflorescence buds to make sweet-scented bags as they have the strongest concentration of essential crude oil but , rather than squander what you chop up down now , you’re able to still dry out the seeds for lavender bags .

Rolawn blog 3

To make these really dewy-eyed travelling bag , once the cum are teetotal , cut some small circle of fabric ( employ a saucer or side plate as a templet ) , piazza about a tablespoon of seeds in the centre then gather up the fabric and bind a piece of palm around to secure it .

With all of these comparatively dim-witted universe you could spread the joy of your garden among admirer , congener and neighbours this Christmas . Or even just enjoy a short reminder of the delectation and pleasure you got from growing it all in the first place !
