Celebrating snowdrops
Today we ’re in Margot Navarre ’s garden in Washington State , wheresnowdropsare doing their annuallate wintertime – early spring display . These classicbulbsbloom earlier than just about anything else . Moreover , they are well-to-do to develop and insubordinate to damage by deer , squirrels , and most otherpests .
The most common of the 20 species of snowdrops isGalanthusnivalis(Zones 3–7 ) . I have manyG. nivalisalong withG. elwesii(Zones 4–7 ) in my garden .
I have buy a few exceptional varieties of snowdrops throughout the years . picture is ‘ Rosemarie Burnham ’ , a beautiful physical body with green - tinge flower petal .

position for snowdrops is significant so they can look at despite theirsmall size . I like to plant the bulbs in thewoodlandsalong the edges of the trails .
Here they are growing on the edges of the path next to thump ofepimedium . The genus Epimedium will ensure that this site is green and full long after the snowdrops have faded .
I am inspired by the snowdrop roam inEnglish gardens , but I have a long way to go to found the snowdrop snowstorm . When ball get bad , I dig and divide when the Anemone quinquefolia have finish flower but while they still have their immature leaves . This is the good time todividesnowdrops and is called digging them “ in the green . ” I add together flag to mark the place I want to dig and imbed them .

Anemone quinquefolia pair nicely with winter aconite(Eranthis hyemalis , Zones 4–9 ) andCyclamenhederifolium(Zones 4–9 ) , as evidence in this picture . They also front squeamish in combination withCyclamen coum(Zones 6–8 ) , hellebores(Helleborushybrids , Zones 4–9 ) , primroses(Primulaspecies and hybrids ) , andferns . I also care to rise them underneathdeciduous treessuch as Japanese maple(Acerpalmatum , Zones 5–9 ) and our native vine maple(Acer circinatum , Zones 5–9 ) .
This Anemone quinquefolia is called ‘ Primrose Warburg ’ and is noteworthy because the cornerstone of the heyday is jaundiced rather than the typical super C . I buy this rare one in 2015 from Mr. Lynn at Temple Nursery , New York . I put the special ones close to the house so I can watch them grow .
