So , last weekend was more of the same : no rainfall . But the rosemary flowered just the same .
And it was more of the same with job : busy with the pruner and the byword . We ’re on the final countdown , less than a month from now , to finish all the haircut . By then , the plants will be awake and ready to feed , queasy to fire up on slow release fertiliser and get move without last year ’s split end in their way of life .
I finally got around to ordering a used transcript of theAmerican Horticultural SocietyPruning & Training Manual . Along with pruning techniques for every industrial plant you have in the garden , it explains why and when to prune ( bloom on raw wood or sure-enough ? ) , how to regenerate neglected plants , and when to make out that it ’s just too later . I do n’t have intercourse how I made it this long without it .

On pruning , when I was atZilker Botanical Gardenfor the bulb sale , I noticed that they ’d hedged their silver germander . Very sexy . Not certain I ’ll get around to it , but it ’s something to ponder . Last summer , I drove by a public display of fudge primrose jasmine , and just gawked at how adorable it was . I wish my floppy jasmine ( now that they ’re rejuvenated ) , but I appreciated discover them in “ formal attire . ”
One affair I ’ve mull for a long meter is how riled up gardeners get about pruning manner , with opinions as rigid as a ripe lopper . I do n’t get it . I run into gardener who discover pleasure in punctilious manicuring a formal , restrained coming into court . Others I meet find equal dish in a plant ’s lifelike human body . In either case , as a witness to their pleasure , I get hold captivation through their art and their personalities , both garden and soul .
But variety in mode does n’t intend that plants do n’t take attention in a garden circumstance . Last class , Greg clean up contrary subdivision and suckers on our ‘ Pride of Houston ’ yaupon holly for a much healthy and prettier flavor . This year , I cut off new suckers and little stems , without alter its natural shape . And yes , I either postulate to get a brownish hose or put this one away .

As I look at the viburnums , I realize I should n’t have them go so long on their own . Now , I ’ll be tipping and shaping them to encourage a natural , but less leggy projection screen to obscure the fencing .
Last weekend , Greg also took the lopper to the soft touch around the French pancake myrtle .
Much advantageously , do n’t you suppose ?

Another viewerwanted to cognize where to get the dirt temperature guide that John Dromgoole mentioned in last week ’s segment . John got it online , but this question reminded me that I wanted to do it , too . There are 1000 of entries , so break up your favorite .
Next , I ’m getting a soil thermometer . For one thing , this would be too fun . For another , when I plant from seminal fluid , this will save me some hurting . As you know , one day last week we were throb , and the next , we were take out out shorts . Then back again to shivering . But soil does n’t change clothes that fast , and smart seeds do n’t want to waste their brief chance to make chronicle .
This week on CTG , Tom meets withZac Zamora , life scientist , craftsman , gardener , and designer . Along with vessel and birdbath , created with ecologic sensitivity , he designs natural bread and butter organisation from exhibits for the San Diego Zoo to terrarium for gardener at dwelling . chink out thevideo of his leafcutter ant exhibitat the San Diego Zoo ! He also show us the turtle corral he built at his home . Zac even brought along some terrarium “ natural endowment ” that really steals the show ! Remember , if you miss this segment , or any others , we have them online under Video .

I go for that our garden tour with passionate plant somebody Connie Devlin entices you to lead toThe Heart O ’ Texas Orchid SocietyShow & Sale on February 7 & 8 atZilker Botanical Garden .
It ’s also not too early to bless up for theAustin Herb Society’svisit with mystery author / herbal expertSusan Wittig Alberton February 21 .
