Events that Changed My Life
Let me state you , I was pretty proud of this long ago !
And rightfully so . My first garden life - changing event was when we buy a house with a dusty curtilage have by fire ants . With more energy than knowledge or money , I embarked on a journey that has n’t yet strive its name and address . Who knows how I ’d be spending my time now if not for those fire ants ?
The more I learned , the more the garden changed .

As the garden changed , the more I learned / am learning .
When I initiate , there were n’t gobs of garden events / talk every weekend at local nurseries . It was toZilker Botanical Gardenthat I headed to determine about drouth - tough adaptable and native plants like Mexican feather grass .
At the Austin Area Garden Council clubs ’ meetings , show and sale , I picked up one - on - one lesson in phytology , works cultivation and wildlife sustainability .

At Zilker Garden Festival ( then Florarama ) I commence my firstSalvia greggi — a native plant life ! What a prize ! I raced home to plunge a nonmigratory genus Ligustrum and chop out grass for a new front yard garden .
Always , I haul home a proboscis load of local garden artistic creation and surprises , like this crinum lily .
On March 29 & 30,join the sport for industrial plant , garden talk of the town , Kids Corner and lively music at the 57thZilker Garden Festival !

Another vainglorious event for me : Mayfield Park’sannual Trowel & Error Symposium .
I ’ve always loved the historic Gutsch garden and planetary house at Mayfield ( we even thought about getting married there ) .
Over the yr , I ’ve attend every Trowel & Error to learn from passionate gardeners ( talker and Edgar Guest ) and pick up heirloom plants at the plant sale .

On April 5 from 9:30 – 1 p.m. , Mayfield ’s get another super card ! Landscape graphic designer and horticulturist Amanda Moon go for “ Heat & Drought Tolerant Plants You May Not Have Heard Of . ”
Writers forTexas Gardener magazineinclude passionate andinformative bloggerJay White : “ Fence Me In : choose right keep for Tomatoes . ”
And equally passionateMaster GardenerPatty Leander : “ Go Vertical in the Garden with Climbing , Vining , and roll Vegetables . ”

I ’ll be there , too , as the Raffle Queen , with fabulous gifts from many generous donors !
The eventthat really turned my imaginativeness to aboriginal plants is when I attended the first Bluebonnet Blast at the original fix of theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center .
At the semi - annual plant sales , I ’m always adding to my aggregation , like rock rose ( Pavonia lasiopetala ) andCalylophus berlandieri .

I ’m so glad I took a chance two geezerhood ago on Texas bluegrass ( Poa arachnifera ) , here with blackfoot daisy . I ’ve started to separate the Poa for other shady smudge in the garden . . .that includes non - natives , too , but all suited for drouth and wildlife .
Some part - shade plant life like golden groundsel ( Packera obovata ) are n’t yet available in nurseries . This one ’s so popular that you really involve to get there on Members Day !
One big lesson I ’ve learned is that “ native ” is not a catchall . industrial plant native to careen are never going to be slaked in my Blackland Prairie land . Others desire conditions that I just do n’t have . So , I ’ll admire endearing Texas tulip gentian at the Wildflower Center !

OnApril 12 & 13 ; members twenty-four hour period on April 11,admire away and grab your goodies , walk and lecture , kid ’s outcome , and more . Click that data link to also get the flora list . I like to have it as a resource for my ground - break endeavors !
All these events plunk for the organizations ’ yr - prospicient endeavors to inspire and guide us .
Next week , we launch our give time of year with all Modern shows , starting with Eric Pedley ’s deer - proof succulent and a couple ’s garden journeying that started with a flood tide of ideas to manipulate flooding .

Thanks for cease by ! Linda
