Euonymus. Spindle Trees.

In October I write a post about the fall color in   the arboretum at East Bergholt Place , Suffolk . I did not show you any of the wonderful specimens ofEuonymuswhich I saw there .   Rupert Eley has the National Collection ofEuonymus , so you find   unity   here that you probably have never seen before . Euonymushave fantastic autumn leaves   and lobed capsules which split open to reveal   bright reddish    berry . If you have admired them but   have n’t chosen one yet , take on . I ’m sure you will regain something   that appeals to you . For instance , how about the take up Charles Edward Berry onEuonymus hamiltonianus ‘ Koi Boy ’ ?

Euonymus hamiltonianus‘Koi Boy ’

One with similar   dark-skinned berries is the unusualEuonymus hamiltonianus‘Pop Corn ’

I loveEuonymus hamiltonianusvarieties because many of them have pink leaves and pink berries like this one , Euonymus hamiltonaianussubsp.hians

genus Euonymus hamiltonianussubs.hians

Eounymus hamiltonianus ‘Koi Boy’

If this is a bit pale for you then how about the bright pinkEuonymus hamiltonianus‘Miss Pinkie ’ ?

Euonymus hamiltonianus‘Miss Pinkie ’

Or if something a bit darker appeals to you thenEuonymus hamiltonianus‘Red Elf ’ maybe fits the bill .

There are so many varieties   ofEuonymus hamiltonianusto opt one , and they are all gorgeous .   The only one I am not penetrative on is   one called   ‘ Fiesta ’ . It has pink   mottled leaves , I think it look diseased .

genus Euonymus hamiltonianus ‘ Fiesta ’

Euonumus hamiltonianus subs. hians

I also bask the ChineseEuonymus bungeanusfor its lovely pinkish leaf in Autumn . My favourite isE. bungeanus‘Dart ’s pride ’ .

Euonymus bungeanus‘Dart ’s pride ’

And now for some more unusual unity . Not necessarily beautiful , but certainly different is this one , Euonymus americanus . ‘Narrow Leaf ’ . It has fruit which are quite unlike any of the others but they are a mo sparse .

Euonymus hamiltonianus ‘Miss Pinkie’

Euonumus ameriicanus . Narrow Leaf

I do n’t suppose anyone will be seeking out the next one , Euonymus japonicus‘Robustus ’ The fruit look rather like capers .

Euonymus japonicus‘Robustus ’

Euonymus hamiltonianus ‘Red Elf’

Euonymus clivicolavar.rongchuensisis certainly strange , and I think the Jesters ’ chapeau are rather jolly .

genus Euonymus clivicolavar.rongchuensis

A great choice for brilliant   fall colour would be a potpourri ofEuonymus planipes . I particularly like ‘ Sancho ’ . It has such lovely violent leaves and masses of promising orange berries .

The nativeEuonymus europaeus‘Red Cascade ’ is a pop form and easy to recover . It is well identify because it does have a shower of bright color berries .

I thinkEuonymus euopeaus‘Thornhayes ’ is even better with its bronze foliage and teemingness   of fruit .

Euonymus europaeus‘Thornhayes ’

Another commonly seenEuonymusis the wingedEuonymus alatus . This is an Asian species which has corky offstage like new offshoot . They often have amazing folio colour .   I loveEuonymus alatusvar.apterus and Euonymus alatus ‘ Timber Creek ’

Euonumus ameriicanus. Narrow Leaf

The most astonishing lipstick red leafage of all is to be found onEuonymus alatus‘Rudy Haag ’ .

Euonymus japonicus ‘Robustus’

I will finish with the unusual Euonymus oxyphylluswhich I trust come from Korea . There are two absolute beauties . E.oxyphllus‘Waasland andE.oxyphyllus‘Angyo Elegant ’

Euonymus oxyphyllus ‘ Waasland ’

Euonymus clivicola var. rongchuensis

I love the way that the fruits on ‘ Angyo graceful ‘ dangle on footling stalks   like earrings . And how well the leaves match the colour of the seed character .

Euonymus oxyphyllus ‘ Angyo Elegant ’

The name Spindle Tree comes from the fact that at one prison term spindles were made from the Sir Henry Joseph Wood . There are 170 species ofEuonymusand this is just a taste of some of them which caught my eye . I have hear that some species ofEuonymus , particularlyEuonymus europaeusare very invading in America . This is such a pity if it mean that you may not lighten up your Autumn garden with these jewels . Here in the UK the only thing to be aware of is that some species harbour the black fly which bankrupt our broad noggin . The other thing to remember is that the berry are venomous . Fortunately they are not toxic to birds who love them . My robin seems to have pack up permanent residence in the tree diagram to ensure that no other birdie endeavor to share its bounteousness .

So many endearing different kinds ! They are invasive in sure area of the U.S. ( but not the Pacific Northwest where I hold up ) , so they often commend growing blueberries for fall leaf color instead . I do like the single you ’ve present with a combination of bright leaves and carmine and orange berries .

Although I do n’t have one of these tree diagram , I pass one daily and only ever point out it at this time of the twelvemonth . I had presumed it was E. alatus and without knock on the door I ’d hardly expect to find out it ’s varietal name but looking at your icon , I ’d say that Rudy hag is as near as any of them get . I had no idea there was as many species . Each one is beautiful ( although I ’m not sure about E. japonica Robustus up there ) but do rather like the contrast of the red leaves and orange berries of Sancho . Great web log Chloris !

They ’re all tremendous . Sadly , there are none suited to life in my sphere of southerly California .

Super post , I never knew there were so many multifariousness . I must definitely find one or two or maybe three for the woodland !

Oh what riches Chloris ! The first euonymous I encountered was in autumn at a now sadly long close local greenhouse . I came to an disconnected halt and my jaw positively shake off . They are first-class trees . I did have it off they harboured blackfly but a price worth paying .

I did n’t substantiate there were so many metal money of Euonymous , either ! We have two E. alatus here , and they ’re stunning in the downfall ! unluckily , they ’re becoming a problem in some component of the U.S. , and are quite invasive here in my land . But I do n’t require to pull mine out ! Such a dilemma . They surely have a healthy collection there at the botanical garden !

These are such beautiful bush / Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and fortunately not invasive where I be so I can seek out some more sort like Koi Boy – arresting !
