First signs of the new season

Hi GPODers ! This is Joseph , your GPOD editor , and today we ’re going to be visiting my garden in eastern Virginia , where saltation is beginning to spread .

We ’ve had a very , very balmy winter here in my part of Virginia , with no snow at all and no real cold weather , so the nonwinter has been slowly unfolding into outpouring , with passel of goodies on display . The winter may have been unforesightful and mild , but I ’m eagerly enjoying every sign of spring and the fresh gardening season , and I promise myself that I ’m going to constitute a stack more early blossom material for next year .

Anemonecoronaria(Zones 7–10 ) is just beginning to bloom . I ’ve go through these in garden around townspeople and am thrilled that I planted the fiddling bulbs last drop . I institute mostly blues and whites , but they come in all sorts of shades of red and pinkish and violet as well . I ’ve run across them keep blossom well into May here , so I ’m front forwards to a long exhibit of flowers .

Unlike mostbulbsyou industrial plant in the fall , the anemone put up foliage almost at once , so I ’ve had this very attractive greenery to look at all winter .

Pansies and genus Viola are , of line , crucial . These have been blooming nonstop since I planted them back in October .

Except for the ones that got eaten by deer . I have been spraying them withdeer repellent , but I did n’t keep up on it regularly enough , and this is the resultant . I ’m very annoyed . Another point for the anemone picture in the beginning : It has n’t been bothered by the cervid at all ( at least not yet ) .

This short crocus ( Crocuschrysanthus‘Goldilocks ’ , Zones 4–8 ) was an impulse purchase last fall , and a good one . My only rue is that I did n’t imbed more ! I ’m adding it to the listing for this fall .

Tulipsare just poking through the soil . I planted a LOT of tulips and am hoping for a dear show . I ’m spray them with deer repellent religiously .

Camellias are , of course , essential wintertime and leaping flub for any southerly garden . I just go to a newfangled house less than a twelvemonth ago , and the previous owner was n’t a gardener , so I ’ve stick a lot of plant to bestow — peculiarly camellia ! This isCamelliajaponica‘Silver Waves ’ ( Zones 7–10 ) , which is bloom in a container , hold back for me to decide where it is drop dead to be living .

last , a small anticipation : atree peony(Peoniaostii , Zones 5–9 ) is already push new increase and has lots of productive , hopeful , flower buds . peony in ecumenical really do much better in colder climates , but my climate is JUST cool enough to get away with a few , especially the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree peonies .
