With more than 140 hydrangea plants in their garden , Eric and Christopher Feml - Nelsen have been lovingly dubbed “ The Hydrangea Kings ” by fellow gardeners . Here , in their Upstate New York garden , two Adirondack chairs create a quaint seating area in their “ Hydrangea Room , ” a space for Eric and Christopher to savor one of their favourite plant .

When Eric and Christopher Feml - Nelsen move into their Upstate New York place in 2018 , they were n’t expectant fans of the landscaping on the suburban 1/2 - acre property , which consisted of smoke and a couple spiraea . Though they did n’t have a clear-cut picture of on the button what they wanted , they do recall knowing “ this is n’t it . ” So , the couple head to their nearest garden center where an employee looked at pictorial matter of their garden , made a few recommendation , and walked them around to look at plants . They left that mean solar day with two new plants — but they also leave finger a small overwhelmed .

Taking it upon themselves to get doing some of their own garden enquiry , Eric and Christopher start devouring garden powder store , watching Gardener ’s World with Monty Don , and fleece up selective information via online contentedness from Divine such as Laura from Garden Answer , Erin the Impatient Gardener , and more . Though the two had no courtly garden training under their belts , their willingness to plunk into the gardening resource uncommitted to them and try matter out is what lead to their gradual backyard transformation .

As they begin chipping away at their garden , they pop their Instagram news report , GrowForMeGardening . “ At first , it was kind of like our diary , ” explains Eric . “ We were just taking pretty pictures and documenting our journeying . ” Instagram viewers begin watch along , and once Eric and Christopher turned the television camera around and started sharing their personality , too , their follower fell in sexual love with the people behind the camera and their inspirational commentary as much as their garden .

Today , the couple has a remarkable garden with a contemporaneous bungalow esthetic . We sit down and confabulate with Eric and Christopher about what they learned throughout the cognitive operation of design their garden from the ground up .

1. Create a Statement at the Entrance

A stately arch , 6 feet wide at the root word and 8 feet tall at its highest point , connects two garden beds and draws visitors into Eric and Christopher ’s backyard .

walk through the side yard of Eric and Christopher ’s home , visitors are greeted with an telling arch that beckon them far into the backyard and sum up repetition , symmetricalness , and structure to the space . Growing along each side of the archway are Generous Gardener English climbing roses by David Austin accompanied by ‘ Betty Corning ’ clematis . Bobo hydrangeasground the archway , making it more substantial at the al-Qa’ida .

When they sawthis archon clearance at Gardener ’s Supply Company , Eric and Christopher forthwith thought about lay it in this sunny orbit where it could connect two garden bed . gemstone placed in the grass break up the formalities of the lawn , lend to the aesthetical .

2. Carefully Consider Textures & Colors

A close - up on a stunning combination in a shady planting bottom : ColorBlaze ® Royale Apple Brandy ® coleus(maroon with bright dark-green - lily-livered edges),‘Queen of Hearts ' brunnera(dark green with a silver overlay),‘Peppermint Patty ' bergenia(waxy green foliage ) , andShadowland ® ' Coast to Coast ' hosta(puckered golden leaves ) .

When it comes to tally flora to their garden beds , Eric and Christopher explicate that they do n’t needs plan out the intact bottom before they start planting . That ’s not to say that a portion of thought and consideration does n’t go into the designing , though .

As they begin filling a layer , the gardeners take into account how each raw improver will lend to the overall space . For example , each new plant must have a texture and color that will heighten , rather than detract or swim out , the flora that are already there .

In this shady garden seam , a form of textures and colors abound . “ The coleus work very well with the golden hosta , ” Christopher says . “ But on top of that , the texture of the hellebore leaves complements the texture of the brunnera . ” Here , textures and colors are n’t repeated , so no characteristic is lost next to another .

3. Add a Touch of Whimsy

Cafe lights on their garden archway , creating a fairy garden vibe after the sunlight goes down , is just one way Eric and Christopher break out up the formality of their space .

To Eric and Christopher , adding subtle , whimsical details arrive at the garden a fun topographic point to explore . “ Having cafe brightness on the archway make it like a sprite garden at night , ” says Eric . “ I also wish small things like ‘ head ’ planters that look like they have fun dizzy hair come out the top . ”

While the pair does revel tot fun garden artistic creation , they emphasize that in their garden they flummox to keep the whimsical low - Francis Scott Key . “ Little elements that pop out serve to break up the formality , but we do tend to go subtle with it , ” adds Christopher .

4. Create Garden Vignettes

In the foreground , maroon leaves of a Ruby Falls redbud tree . A Campania outpouring , surrounded by low-cal - purple Walker ’s Low Nepeta cataria , adds to the unagitated atmosphere of this outside seating area .

Eric and Christopher expect at each sphere of their garden as its own alone vignette that contributes to the big pic . Here , framed by leaves of a Ruby Falls redbud tree diagram is a picturesque view : the colour and build of the leaves provide a perfect demarcation to the airy , royal - blooming Walker ’s Low catmint . From this perspective , the redbud seems to frame the Campania fountain and seat area beyond .

“ When we draw near each space of the garden , we opine about how a vignette count on its own , but we also guess about how it fits in with the remainder of the garden , ” read Eric . Currently , the two are considering sum a plant to climb the legs of the arbor .

Listening to their thought process makes it clean-cut that they are thoughtful about each young addition : They describe not want something too similar in color or texture to the plants in the same locality , but they do want to be certain that whatever they add serves to tie the belittled sketch together with the garden as a whole .

5. Embrace Evergreens

Eric and Christopher planted a ‘ Troemner ’ loan-blend spruce to provide year - round structure to this repeated garden layer .

When designing most of their repeated garden bed , Christopher and Eric take a gradual , constituent approach — seeing what ferment as they add each plant . However , when it comes to adding evergreens to their thou , they have been very strategic , spacing them out intentionally and with a purpose . Some have been add to make privacy from neighbors , others to make the structure of a “ room , ” while several have been sum up to provide weight in expanse of the garden that take it .

“ When you look out at our garden in winter , you see evergreen plant and passel of white , ” suppose Eric . “ I sleep together them in winter , but I also love them in the grow season because they offer solid weight unit . ” For example , in a bed that ’s primarily flossy in texture , sum a Hinoki cypress trimmed into a bowling orchis shape serves to ground the outer space .

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

In a lava stone plantation owner , Eric and Christopher planted aSolenia Apricot begoniafrom Proven Winners . After falling in love with the plant , they plan to give it a permanent smear in hanging refinement baskets .

While Christopher and Eric are vainglorious believers in using plants you screw as your creation , they accentuate the beauty of trying new thing , too . One mode they suggest doing this ? establish them in containers . container can be act around to different areas of the garden , so , as Eric says , “ They ’re low commitment . ”

For exemplar , last year , the two received plants from Proven Winners to evaluate and enjoy , many of them quite different from plants they typically gravitate towards . They place these plants in containers near upraise bed . When Eric bought seeds of centaurea to adjudicate out , those start in container , too . “ When we maturate plant in colors we ’re not used to , we can keep them contained , ” enjoin Christopher . This is often how they find their fresh favorites .

A few years ago , Eric wanted to try aPrimo ® ' Peachberry Ice ' heucherawith aMagic Show ® ' Ever After ' veronica . They try it in a container , and both gardener ended up falling in love with the combining , which has now become a regular in one of their garden bottom .

7. Include Vignettes with Contrasting Colors

Verbena bonariensis , with its clusters of royal flush atop long stems , complement a planting layer across the fashion , a hedge ofLimelight hydrangea — creamy with a touch of lime unripe .

One of Eric and Christopher ’s strategy is to have color repeat throughout the garden for a mother wit of cohesion . “ You want to ascertain the coloring material you think take care great together , ” sound out Eric . “ In our case , we use peck of purple throughout . With purple , we use lime common , apricot , pinks , creams , and blues . ”

In addition to intend about colors in their overall garden , they think about colour within each vignette by pick a color palette for the blank then stick to it . “ We make a tip to limit a pallette in a sketch to a handful of complementary colour , ” say Christopher .

Although the couple make out including purpleness , it is important to mention that they are conscious of emplacement and seek to nullify drowning plants out in a sea of the same color . “ If you do that , everything blends together , ” says Eric , “ but we require each plant to stand out . ”

8. Create a Hangout Spot That Fits Your Needs

A bed containing two of Eric and Christopher ’s favorite plants — hydrated lime - unripe Limelight hydrangea and purple catmint — precede up to their cozy seating field . A louvered pergola , Adirondack chairs , and a gasoline fire orchestra pit furnish a informal place to attend out in the evenings .

When planning their outside seating area region , Eric and Christopher customized their quad to assemble their need . They really wish the facial expression of pavers interspersed with gravel , but they did n’t want the mess that normally comes along with it . To keep the space tidy , they opt for low gravel instead of pea crushed rock which has a sharp bound , so it does n’t typically roll around underfoot .

The pergola , purchased from Costco , has a louvered roof which they can keep open for an airy flavor , or close to pin down heat energy from the fire pit . Not wanting to defend or stock a woods pile , they opt for a gas fire stone pit . When ask if they drop meter out here often , the two say , “ All the time … as long as it ’s over 50 point ! ”
