To reduce energy consumption and nursery gasolene emission at the Chilliwack campus at Canada Education Park , UFV is working with Fortis - BC Energy Inc. ( FortisBC ) as an early adopter in their Gas Absorption Heat Pump ( GAHP ) programme .

FortisBC will contribute approximately $ 570,000 to the innovation , purchase , initiation , and commission of GAHP applied science at UFV ’s Trades and Technology Centre ( TTC ) . The project will see six heat and one combined heating / supplemental chill GAHP units installed . They ’ll admit measurement and verification instrumentation , with the ability to showcase real - time performance data . Work on installation began in late December 2023 and will be finish by March .

This organisation transfers inflame between ambient outdoor and indoor melodic phrase and impress it inside or outside , depend on whether space require to be heated or chill . There is heat within outside air , even in wintertime , which can be used for heating . By capturing heating plant , less natural gas pedal is needed compare to the boiler systems that are currently in billet , making the novel GAHP technology set up more than 100 percentage energy effective .

“ This engineering will showcase an innovative solution to heat and supplemental cooling at UFV while taking important steps to reduce greenhouse gas discharge do clime change , ” tell Doran Hoge , director of energy and environmental sustainability in UFV ’s Office of Sustainability .

UFV ’s TTC is a 70,000 - straightforward - invertebrate foot edifice that was reconstruct around 1974 and animate in 2007 . It houses shop and classrooms for a wide orbit of program , include but not limited to Plumbing and Piping , Floral Design , Culinary Arts , and Welding . The building presently uses approximately 10,000 gigajoules of natural gas per year . This projection is calculate to save 860 gigajoules of natural gas and 37 tonnes of glasshouse gases annually .

“ We acclaim UFV for their leadership in advance innovative approach to saving energy by installing these units in their facilities , and we are proud to work with them to host the first GAHP demonstration and training facility in Canada , ” says Danielle Wensink , film director of conservation and Department of Energy direction at FortisBC . “ This is an splendid educational opportunity for the staff , educatee , and FortisBC ’s commercial-grade customers to see a GAHP organization in mental process and learn more about how energy efficiency plays a primal role in reduce greenhouse gas emission . ”

The GAHP demonstration and training system will take into account the university to track tangible - time vim purpose and glasshouse gas emissions , which will be available for purpose as a instruction pecker for course at UFV . The TTC will also serve as an educational readiness for attribute managers , engineers , and contractile organ interested in GAHP technology .
