Catriona McLean was inspire by Bela ’s Croatian garden , and is partake her garden in the South of France !
" I have been subscribing to all right horticulture for some fourth dimension and when I escort your pic of the Croatian garden on the other side of the Mediterranean I thought I should divvy up some photos of my garden here in the South of France . My husband and I moved from Scotland to the Hérault vale near Montpellier about 12 years ago , leave behind a beautiful walled garden which was featured several time in the English gardening magazine ; Now we have a totally teetotal Mediterranean garden , semi wild and care free but with body structure of yield trees and lavender and phlomis and key garrigue plants and shrub which we have created from 3000sq metres of vinyard land – very poor grease , very alkaline 8.6PH , with long hot summer and the occasional storm , stick with by damp mild wintertime with intermittent rain – never very cold but can go to about -6 to -10 ° C if a cold wintertime . True Mediterranean climate like California .
We now water seldom the established planting , but do water by hand the newly embed trees , shrubs and perrenials until they find their root systems have delved down to discover enough humidity in the basis to hold out the blistering summer months . A very different form of gardening to that which we did in Scotland . all the plants are Mediterranean sourced from local specialist nurseries and I propagate much from semen and cuttings . Other plants admit those that can live the alkaline soil and drouth – certain bad roses , irises , grasses and even acquilegias . Many plants disappear in the summer but re appear after the first dense rains in August and September . All planting goes dormant and shuts down when the temperatures strain into the 30 ° C ’s which is quite normal but still remain very beautiful ; only to re - start in the fall with much florescence right up to Christmas . "
